Description

Jock itch (tinea cruris) presents with pruritis and erythema in the groin and inner thighs. Several other conditions can cause similar findings and share similar risk factors (sweating, strenuous exercise, etc).

Differential diagnosis of tinea cruris:

(1) allergy (to allergens in clothing, powders, medicines, etc)

(2) pubic lice (Phthirus pubis)

(3) chafing from clothing

(4) miliaria rubra (prickly heat, heat rash)

(5) eczema

(6) lichen simplex chronicus

(7) erythrasma

(8) intertrigo

(9) candidiasis

(10) seborrheic dermatitis

(11) Darier's disease

(12) benign familial chronic pemphigus

These conditions should be considered if topical antifungal agents fail to work.
