Description

Blinking of the eyelids occurs relatively frequently and helps to protect the exposed globe. A number of conditions may reduce how often a person blinks as a reflex.

Conditions associated with reduced blinking:

(1) wearing contact lenses

(2) acute encephalitis or post-encephalitis state

(3) ethanol use

(4) early infancy

(5) Parkinson's disease

(6) psychosis

(7) progressive supranuclear palsy

(8) thyrotoxicosis

Some people may learn how to suppress blinking, but this is difficult.
