Description

Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis need to be distinguished from other causes of bowel inflammation which may mimic their appearance clinically and histologically.


 

Differential diagnosis of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease - infectious:

(1) Clostridium difficile

(2) Shigella species

(3) Salmonella species

(4) Yersinia species

(5) Campylobacter species

(6) other Gram-negative bacteria

(7) Entamoeba histolytica

(8) Schistosomiasis mansoni

(9) other parasites

(10) viral gastroenteritis

 

Differential diagnosis of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease - noninfectious:

(11) collagenous colitis

(12) lymphocytic colitis

(13) radiation ileitis or colitis

(14) catharctic (laxative-related) colitis

(15) chemical colitis, often associated with enemas

(16) solitary rectal ulcer syndrome

(17) diversion-related colitis

(18) "normal" inflammatory response

(19) eosinophilic gastroenteritis

(20) ischemic colitis
