Description

Rarely crystals can be seen in a colon biopsy.


 

Endogenous causes of mucosal crystals:

(1) Charcot-Leyden crystals (with eosinophilic infiltrate)

(2) cholesterol crystals from atheroemboli

 

Exogenous crystals:

(1) oxlate following ethylene glycol poisoning

(2) extravasated chemical from enema (barium, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, other)

(3) Sevelamer or other drug crystals

(4) drugs or chemicals administered per rectum

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) in vitro artifact during handling or processing
