Description

Globus pharyngeus is a clinical symptom that may be associated with one or more conditions.


Differential diagnosis of globus pharyngeus:

(1) gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

(2) hiatus hernia

(3) abnormal function of the upper esophageal sphincter

(4) esophageal motor disorder

(5) pharyngeal inflammation (tonsillitis, chronic sinusitis, pharyngitis, etc)

(6) benign or malignant tumor of the upper aerodigestive tract

(7) disorder involving the base of the tongue, including lingual tonsil

(8) retroverted epiglottis

(9) thyroid disease (goiter, etc)

(10) cervical heterotopic gastric mucosa

(11) psychological stress or other factors

(12) foreign body

(13) cervical osteophyte

 

More than one of these conditions may be present (mixed).
