Description

Patients with Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) are often anemic. The anemia may reflect severe conditions.

Patient selection: chronic granulomatous disease (CGD)

Differential diagnosis of anemia in CGD:

(1) iron deficiency

(2) vitamin deficiency (vitamin B12, folate, other)

(3) anemia of chronic disease

(4) hemolytic anemia, including cold agglutinin disease and vasculitis

(5) sequestration secondary to splenomegaly

(6) gastrointestinal bleeding associated with gastrointestinal disease

(7) McLeod neuroacanthocytosis syndrome

(8) glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency

It is important to release that the anemia may be complex and may need a complete workup if simple iron and vitamin replacement are insufficient to correct the anemia.
