A number of disorders may occur in the orbit of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Orbital pathology that can occur in SLE:
(1) periorbital edema
(2) ocular myositis
(3) inflammatory pseudotumor
(4) orbital apex syndrome
(5) orbital ischemia/infarction
(6) panniculitis
(7) acquired Brown's syndrome
MRI and other imaging studies can help to localize the process but the diagnosis may require a biopsy.
Differential diagnosis:
(1) opportunistic infection
(2) tumors unrelated to SLE
