A hypertensive emergency occurs when end-organ damage occurs during a sudden rise in blood pressure. Abdominal pain may occur if intra-abdominal end-organs are affected.
Patient selection: hypertensive crisis
Potential sources of abdominal pain include:
(1) acute pancreatitis
(2) intestinal infarction
(3) acute gastrointestinal bleeding
(4) hemorrhage into the adrenal glands
(5) dissection or expansion of an aortic aneurysm
