Description

Macrocytic anemia is associated with an elevated mean cell volume (MCV).


Macrocytic anemia with hypersegmented neutrophils is termed megaloblastic.

 

Common causes of macrocytic anemia:

(1) vitamin B12 deficiency

(2) folate deficiency

(3) myelodysplasia

(4) drug-induced megaloblastosis

 

Less common causes:

(1) congenital dyserythropoietic anemia

(2) thiamine-dependent megaloblastic anemia

(3) ethanol in high doses

(4) hypothyroidism

(5) reticulocytosis (including immune hemolytic anemia)

(6) liver disease

(7) cold agglutinin disease

(8) aplastic anemia
