Description

A goiter is a relatively common anterolateral neck mass. However, other mass lesions can occur that may be misdiagnosed as goiter.


Masses in the differential diagnosis of goiter:

(1) neck abscess, including tuberculosis

(2) Hodgkin's disease or malignant lymphoma

(3) metastatic carcinoma

(4) ganglioneuroma

(5) other benign soft tissue tumor

(6) amyloidosis (amyloid goiter)

(7) Pneumocystis jirovecii

(8) hematoma

(9) benign cyst

(10) thyroid neoplasm
