A true muscle cramp should show a number of clinical findings.
Clinical features of a muscle cramp:
(1) involuntary shortening of a muscle
(2) sudden and painful
(3) visible or palpable muscle "knot"
(4) variable flexion or extension of an adjacent joint
(5) stretching or massaging of the muscle in order to obtain relief
