Description

Sherer et al reported diagnostic criteria for post-concussion confusional state (PTCS). The authors are from multiple institutions in the United States and Canada.


Patient selection: post-concussion

 

Criteria for PTCS - all of the following:

(1) disturbances of attention (reduced ability to focus or to sustain attention)

(2) disorientation (impaired for place, time and situation)

(3) disturbances of memory (impaired ability to encode and recall new information)

(4) fluctuation (waxing and waning) in the nature and severity of the condition during the course of the day

 

Additional findings may include any of the following:

(1) emotional and/or behavioral disturbances

(2) sleep-wake cycle disturbances

(3) delusions (fixed false beliefs)

(4) perceptual disturbances (hallucinations, illusions)

(5) false memories (confabulation)

 

The disorder of consciousness is sufficient to cause a disability in functional performance or the ability to perform interpersonal tasks.
