Description

The Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) consists of unpleasant sensations in the legs that may interfere with sleep and which are relieved to some degree by leg movement. Patients may also have poor mental health or daytime behavioral problems.


 

Clinical criteria for the Restless Legs Syndrome:

(1) the desire to move the legs, usually associated with paresthesias or an unpleasant feeling (tingling, creepy-crawling, other)

(2) motor restlessness

(3) symptoms worse or present exclusively at rest

(4) symptoms worse in the evening or at night

(5) symptoms with at least partial and temporary relief by activity

(6) symptoms interfere with sleep onset and may disrupt sleep

 

Conditions associated with RLS (correction may alleviate RLS):

(1) nongestational diabetes mellitus (odds ratio 4.42)

(2) obesity

(3) renal failure

(4) pregnancy

(5) iron deficiency

(6) neuropathy

(7) radiculopathy

 

Patient features associated with a higher frequency of RLS:

(1) older age

(2) lower income (odds ratio 2.62)

(3) smoking (odds ratio 2.06 for 1 pack per day vs never)

(4) lack of exercise (odds ratio 3.32)

(5) low alcohol consumption

(6) decreased general health
