Description

Zoster Sine Herpete refers to Herpes zoster without the skin rash.

Features:

(1) reactivation of Varicella zoster virus within the dorsal root ganglia.

(2) failure to develop any skin changes

(3) severe radicular pain

Diagnosis can be difficult and often requires a high level of clinical suspicion. Sophisticated virologic testing is required to confirm the diagnosis.

It is presumably related to a level of immunocompetence that is capable of partially checking the viral reactivation.
