Description

A male diabetic can develop a mastopathy similar to that seen in diabetic females. It is believed to be an autoimmune reaction.


 

Criteria:

(1) male with long-standing insulin-dependent (Type 1) diabetes

(2) gynecomastia

(3) biopsy of the breast shows lymphocytic mastitis with dense fibrous tissue and epithelioid fibroblasts.

(4) absence of an alternative explanation for the gynecomastia

 

The lymphocytic infiltrate is:

(1) periductal and perivascular.

(2) predominantly composed of B-cells

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) malignant lymphoma

(2) chronic mastitis
