Description

Garland et al developed a table for estimating a pediatric patient's weight in kilograms based on height and body habitus. This may be easier to use in an emergency than an equation. The authors are from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

DWEM = devised weight-estimating method

Patient selection: pediatric patient with height/length from 50 to 175 cm

Parameters:

(1) body height or length in cm

(2) body habitus as slim, average or heavy

Observations:

(1) A heavy child can be up to two times the weight of a slim child of the same height.

(2) Over short intervals the height may change but not the weight.

(3) The interval between readings is 5 cm which is almost 2 inches.

In order to change the interval to about 1 inch the following table was created by approximating the midrange weights.
