The Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) can be diagnosed if certain criteria are present.
Criteria for the Developmental Coordination Disorder:
(1) The patient's motor coordination is substantially below the level appropriate for the chronological age and intelligence. If mental retardation is present then the motor disturbance exceeds what is typically expected for the level of retardation.
(2) The impaired coordination is persistent and interferes with activities of daily living (ADL), academic achievements, sports participation and/or ability to work.
The disturbance may involve:
(1) dropping things
(2) poor handwriting
(3) clumsiness
(4) marked delay in reaching motor milestones such as walking, crawling and/or sitting
Exclusion - The disturbance:
(1) does not meet the criteria for a pervasive developmental disorder.
(2) is not due to cerebral palsy, hemiplegia, muscular dystrophy or other general medical condition.
Purpose: To determine if a patient meets criteria for the Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD).
