Description

Gidron et al reported an equation for determining the yield of a hematopoietic stem cell collection (CD34 positive cells). The authors are from Northwestern University in Chicago.

Patient selection: hematopoietic stem cell collection by leukapheresis

Parameters:

(1) peripheral blood CD34-positive cell count per microliter

(2) blood volume processed in liters

(3) total number of CD34 positive cells collected

collection efficiency = yield in percent =

= 100% * (total number of CD34+ cells collected) / ((peripheral blood count) * (blood volume) * 10^6)

where:

• 10^6 is the conversion factor for going to liters to microliters.

The calculation assumes that the peripheral blood CD34 positive count is constant through all of the cycles, even though some have been removed in previous cycles.

The author reported the following equation being useful to identify a patient who can have a successful harvest.

value =

= 14 * (peripheral blood CD34 count per microliter) / (ideal body weight in kg)

If the value is >= 0.3, then there is a good chance for a successful harvest/
