Description

The repeat ordering of a laboratory test may or may not be appropriate. The only way to know for sure is to investigate.

Reasons why the repeat order may be inappropriate:

(1) the second order was from a clinician unaware of the previous order

(2) there was an error at order entry

(3) there was a failure to cancel the test

Reasons why the repeat order may be appropriate:

(1) to check a result that may be in error

(2) to verify a key finding before acting

(3) to evaluate response to therapy

(4) interval change in the patient's condition

(5) verification of a point-of-care (POC) result according to protocol (very low or very high)

(6) different type of specimen
