Description

ElSohly et al identified a metabolite of delta9-tetrahydrocannabivarin in the urine that cannot be explained by Marinol use. The authors are from ElSohly Laboratories in Oxford, Mississippi.

Marinol (dronabinol) is synthetic delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It may be prescribed to control nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients and stimulate appetite in AIDS patients.

Delta9-THC's main urinary metabolite is 11-nor-delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (THC-COOH)

Marijuana contains not only delta9-THC but also other related compounds not found in Marinol not its metabolites. One of these is delta9-tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), and its metabolite in the urine is 11-nor-delta9-tetrahydrocannabivarin-9-carboxylic acid (THCV-COOH).

Detection of 11-nor-delta9-tetrahydrocannabivarin-9-carboxylic acid in the urine indicates marijuana use and cannot be explained by Marinol use alone.
