Desquamative Inflammatory Vaginitis (DIV) is an inflammatory vaginal disorder of unknown etiology.
Clinical features:
(1) chronic
(2) diffuse vaginal rash and erythema
(3) purulent discharge, which may be profuse
(4) vestibulovaginal irritation with dyspareunia
Vaginal pH is elevated (often > 4.5).
Features on vaginal smear:
(1) large numbers of inflammatory cells
(2) increased number of parabasal epithelial cells
Estrogen deficiency may contribute to the condition.
The diagnosis often requires exclusion of other causes of vaginal discharge such as bacterial vaginosis.
