The therapeutic outcome for a person with a diarrheal syndrome can be described using standard terminology.

full response

complete resolution of diarrhea and restoration of normal bowel function

partial response

greater than or equal to 50% reduction in number of bowel movements

failure (no response)

less than 50% reduction in the number of bowel movements

return of symptoms after cessation of therapy

spontaneous remission

resolution of symptoms with no treatment

• I might separate the failure group into 2 subgroups – those with no response at all and those with some response but with a small reduction in bowel movements.
