Paraquat is a corrosive chemical. It and its metabolites are excreted in the urine. Exposure to the voided urine can result in chemical burns to the skin.
Patient selection: exposure to urine from a paraquat-poisoned patient
Clinical findings:
(1) partial or full thickness chemical burn on the skin exposed to urine
(2) pain
(3) variable nausea
Standard personal protective equipment may prove inadequate to prevent chemical exposure.
Recommended PPE:
(1) long sleeves
(2) chemical resistant gloves (nitrile rubber >= 14 mils)
(3) plastic gown
(4) face shield and eye protection
Spilled urine should be treated as a chemical spill with appropriate decontamination.
