Occasionally a patient will attempt to remove one or more of his/her own teeth.
Basis: self-destructive or self-injurious behavior
Risk factors:
(1) drug abuse, especially methamphetamine
(2) psychiatric disorder
Complications:
(1) incomplete extraction
(2) infection with risk of abscess or osteomyelitis
Differential diagnosis:
(1) shedding of a deciduous tooth
(2) dislocation secondary to trauma
