Description

Kaste et al identified risk factors for dental abnormalities in children being treated for cancer. These can help to identify a cancer survivor who should receive close monitoring of orla health. The authors are from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and multiple oncology centers in the United States.


 

Dental abnormalities identified as being associated with cancer therapy:

(1) hypodontia (developmentally missing teeth)

(2) microdontia

(3) abnormal enamel

(4) root abnormalities

(5) excessive dental loss due to decay or gum disease

(6) severe gingivitis

(7) xerostomia

 

Therapy-related risk factors for these dental abnormalities:

(1) radiation exposure >= 20 Gray to dentition

(2) high cumulative doses of alkylating agents received before 5 years of age

 

Socioeconomic factors that may contribute to adverse dental health outcomes in cancer survivors:

(1) female gender

(2) Caucasian race

(3) lower education level

(4) lower household income level
