Description

A patient with a head and neck cancer treated by radiation may develop a number of dental problems, especially if the teeth are within the field of radiation.


Patient selection: head and neck cancer

 

Dental changes secondary to radiation:

(1) dental demineralization

(2) cracked tooth syndrome, including enamel craze lines

(3) dental caries

(4) loosening of teeth secondary to bone resorption

(5) altered binding of restorative/adhesive materials

 

Factors affecting the dental change:

(1) dose of radiation that involves the teeth

(2) xerostomia

(3) change in dental hygiene

(4) change in oral microbiota
