Description

A patient with Sjogren's Syndrome is at increased risk for dental caries. Caries may be the presenting complaint in some patients.

Oral manifestations of Sjogren's syndrome may include:

(1) xerostomia

(2) difficulty swallowing dry food

(3) burning sensation of the tongue

(4) altered taste

(5) sore throat

(6) hoarseness

(7) dry and cracked lips

(8) periodontal disease

(9) severe, recurrent and/or progressive caries

Several strategies have been proposed to reduce caries including topical fluoride and good oral hygiene. Therapy to reduce lacrimal gland inflammation may preserve saliva production.
