Dense Nonaqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPL) is a term applied to a heterogenous group of chemicals contaminating ground water.
Features of a DNAPL:
(1) limited solubility in water
(2) denser than water
(3) limited degradation
(4) accumulations can form a nonaqueous layer or pool in the ground, which may be referred to as a plume
The nature of the contaminated soil will affect how the chemicals accumulate or disperse.
Chemicals that may be involved:
(1) petroleum distillates or byproducts
(2) creosote
(3) chlorinated solvents
(4) polychlorinated biphenyls
(5) pesticides
