Description

Delayed pressure urticaria (DPU) is a form of physical urticaria. This may be noticeable on the hands and feet after exercise or work.


Pressure urticaria refer to whealing following the application of physical pressure.

 

Delayed pressure urticaria describes:

(1) subcutaneous swelling and whealing

(2) following application of a sustained pressure (such as a blood pressure cuff) to the skin

(3) latency period to onset that ranges from 20 minutes to several hours

(4) duration of lesions for hours up to 48 hours

(5) following resolution the affected site is refractory to another episode for hours or days

 

Risk factors:

(1) chronic idiopathic urticaria

(2) angioedema

 

Variation may be due to:

(1) severity of the underlying cause

(2) location

(3) type of pressure

(4) amount of pressure

(5) concurrent therapy with corticosteroids or antihistamines
