Description

Some patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) develop deep vein thrombosis.

Patient selection: hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia

There is an increased risk for thrombosis associated with elevated plasma Factor VIII.

Elevated plasma factor VIII is associated with iron deficiency (from blood loss) in patients with HHT.

A plasma Factor VIII > 1500 IU/L (1.5 IU/mL) has a hazard ratio of 6 compared to a Factor VIII of 1000 IU/L (1 IU/mL). (O'Donnell and Laffan).

Elevated Factor VIII levels may persist for long periods of time.
