Description

Chung and Lin evaluated patients with pancreatitis for the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli. Substantial risk for thromboembolic disease was seen in patients with chronic pancreatitis who were < 55 years old. The authors are from Taichung Hospital, China Medical University, and Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology in Taiwan.

Risk factors for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli:

(1) chronic pancreatitis

(2) one or more comorbidities

Comorbidities:

(1) hypertension

(2) diabetes

(3) cerebral vascular accident

(4) heart failure

(5) all cancer

(6) pregnancy

(7) lower leg fracture

(8) surgery

(9) acute pancreatitis

The risk for a thromboembolic event when both risk factors are present is about twice that when only one risk factor is present.
