A person sitting on the toilet for a prolonged period may develop deep pressure injury which can progress to a pressure ulcer.
Risk factors for pressure injury to the buttocks:
(1) prolonged sitting on the toilet seat
(2) hard, unpadded seat
(3) failure to move periodically
(4) obesity
(5) other comorbidities
Reasons for prolonged sitting on the toilet seat:
(1) disabled patient left on toilet for a long period by caregiver
(2) person passing out on the toilet (stroke, intoxication, drug use)
