Gorelick and Shaw developed a decision rule for when to screen a young girl for a urinary tract infection (UTI).


 

Patient selection: girl from 2 to 24 months of age

 

Parameters:

(1) age in months

(2) duration of fever in days

(3) race

(4) clinical source for fever

(5) temperature in °C

• I would think that any clinical evidence of the urinary tract being the source of infection would also prompt urinalysis.

Interpretation:

• minimum risk score: 0

• maximum risk score: 5

• A girl with a score >= 2 should have her urine screened for evidence of a UTI.
