Description

De Garengeot’s hernia is a rare type of hernia that can be a diagnostic challenge.


 

Named for: Dr Rene Jacques Croissant de Garengeot

 

Features of a De Garengeot’s hernia:

(1) femoral hernia often presenting as a painful or erythematous swelling in the right groin

(2) vermiform appendix within the hernia sac

 

The diagnosis can be made preoperatively on imaging studies (CT, US), but often the diagnosis is made at the time of an emergency operation.

 

Complications:

(1) acute appendicitis which may be ruptured

(2) incarcerated bowel
