The term "dark pattern" refers to a trick used by a website or app to manipulate you into doing something that you do not want or indent to do.


The goal is for the site owners to derive some benefit, such as:

(1) to make more money

(2) to get access to information

(3) to increase clicks or views of advertisements

 

Ways to make more money include:

(1) adding an additional item to a checkout basket

(2) hidden costs or added fees

(3) making something easy to start but hard to discontinue (like a subscription or membership)

 

Ways used to manipulate the user

(1) misdirection

(2) bait and switch

(3) disguised ads

(4) confirmshaming (making the user feel bad for opting out of an offering)

(5) blocking, making an action difficult

(6) use of carefully worded trick questions

(7) limit supply to create a shortage

(8) demanding immediate action
