A number of chemicals may react in a dangerous manner if exposed to a certain stimulus.
The danger may take the form of:
(1) fire
(2) explosion
(3) release of a toxic gas
Hazardous Designation
Description
pyrophoric (air reactive)
spontaneously ignites on exposure to air
vigorous polymerization
chemical monomers may polymerize with release of heat and pressure, with potential for fire or explosion
vigorous condensation
combination of two or more chemicals with release of heat and pressure, with potential for fire or explosion
vigorous decomposition
chemical breaks down into simpler chemicals with release of heat and pressure, with potential for fire or explosion
self-reactive to shock or pressure
unstable chemical that reacts vigorously to mechanical shock or change in pressure
self-reactive to increase in temperature
unstable chemical that reacts vigorously to an increase in temperature
water reactive
contact with water results in release of a toxic and/or flammable gas
