Dellit et al reported an index for measuring the workload of house staff. The total census may not give a complete picture of the burden. The authors are from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center.
Parameters:
(1) total census including admissions and discharges
(2) admissions
(3) discharges
number of patients not being admitted or discharged =
= (total census) - (number of admissions) - (number of discharges)
daily activity index in hours =
= (number of patients not being admitted or discharged) + (2 * (admissions)) + (1.75 * (discharges))
where:
• 2 is the number of hours required for an admission.
• 1.75 is the number of hours required for a discharge.
• 1 hour is assumed for the other assigned patients.
