Description

Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis is a benign congneital lesion that usually presents in pediatric patients. Problems can arise if the mass is presumed to be malignant resulting in radical surgery.


Clinical features:

(1) It typically presents as a unilateral scrotal or inguinal mass.

(2) The lesion may be painful or painless.

(3) Serum beta-HCG and alpha-fetoprotein are not significantly elevated.

 

Imaging features:

(1) The lesion may be cystic or solid on ultrasound.

(2) The lesion is localized to the upper pole of the testis.

 

The pathologic exam of the mass shows cystic dilatation of the rete testis and tubuli recti.

Concomitant findings may include:

(1) ipsilateral renal agenesis

(2) ipsilateral multi-cystic dysplasia of the kidney

(3) dilatation of the seminal vesicle
