Description

Trauma to the orbit can result in a CSF leak, primarily into the retroorbital soft tissues.


Clinical features:

(1) history of trauma to the orbit

(2) swelling of the eyelids

(3) absence of emphysema or hemorrhage

(4) variable leakage of fluid that may mimic tears

 

If periorbital fluid is aspirated, then it may show elevated beta2-transferrin.

 

Potential complication:

(1) meningitis

 

Many patients can be managed conservatively but occasionally surgical closure is required.
