Description

Bird excreta (droppings) may contain viable Cryptococcus species. This can be an important source of human cryptococcosis.


Birds that may pass Cryptococcus include:

(1) Passerine (perching birds)

(1a) sparrow

(1b) skylarks

(1c) canaries

(2) Psittacine

(2a) parrots

(3) Other:

(3a) pigeons

(3b) chickens

 

People at risk from exposure:

(1) immunodeficient patients (HIV-positive, organ transplant, etc)

(2) bird fanciers

(3) animal control officers

(4) veterinarians and zoo personnel

(5) construction workers and people restoring old buildings

(6) farmers and agricultural workers
