Description

Cryptococcus species may occasionally infect bone, even in immunocompetent patients.


On imaging there is a lytic lesion in the affected bone.

 

The patient may be otherwise asymptomatic or the patient may have:

(1) fever or other systemic signs

(2) a lung nodule

(3) lymphadenopathy

 

In an older adult the bone lesion may be initially diagnosed as metastatic cancer.

 

The diagnosis is made by:

(1) histology

(2) fungal culture

(3) serum antigen testing
