Description

Bauer et al compared several methods for measuring the proper length of crutches for a patient. These methods can be used while the person is reclining or seated. The authors are from McDonald and other Army Hospitals in the United States.

Crutches are measured with axillary pads and rubber tips.

length of crutches in cm =

= (self-reported height in cm) * 0.77

length of crutches in inches =

= (self-reported height in inches) * 0.77

length of crutches in cm =

= (self-reported height in cm) - 40.6 cm

length of crutches in inches =

= (self-reported height in inches) - 16

length of crutches in cm =

= (0.719 * (actual height in cm)) + 5.2

length of crutches in inches =

= (0.719 * (actual height in inches)) + 2.05

length of crutches in cm =

= (0.683 * (self-reported height in cm)) + 12.3

length of crutches in inches =

= (0.683 * (self-reported height in inches)) + 4.84

where:

• The data in Table 4 (page 299), shows comparable data between actual and reported height for people 5 feet 8 inches or greater. Shorter people show a 0.5 inch discrepancy in crutch length between reported and actual height, with the self-reported height requiring the slightly longer crutch. The shorter person may be rounding down his or her height.
