Description

Miller et al identified a number of factors critical for the successful implementation of a quality improvement program. These can help guide the initial efforts of an organization to improve its outcomes. The authors are from St Louis University Health Sciences Center and the St. Louis Veterans Affairs Medical Center.


 

Critical factors - people and organization:

(1) leadership

(2) creating the right teams

(3) team building (making them effective)

(4) local commitment (with everyone participating)

(5) proper administration with management, planning and adequate resources

 

Critical factors - creating and achieving goals:

(1) incorporating patient preferences into decisions and measures

(2) using outcomes to improve processes

(3) developing and using appropriate practice guidelines

(4) using objective measures of performance with access to statistical resources
