Criteria of Yokoi et al for Malignancy in a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST)

Purpose: To evaluate a patient with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) using the criteria of Yokoi et al.

Description

Yokoi et al identified criteria which can be used to identify gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) which behave in a malignant fashion. This can help identify patients who may benefit from closer monitoring and more aggressive management. The authors are from Nippon Medical School Chiba in Japan.


Parameters:

(1) diameter of the tumor in cm

(2) tumor necrosis and/or hemorrhage

(3) Ki-67 labeling index (LI; percent of tumor cells staining positive on an immunoperoxidase stain)
