Vasconcelos et al listed criteria for cardiac cirrhosis. In cardiac cirrhosis there is deposition of collagen within lobules with regenerative nodules. The authors are from Universidade Estadual de Campinas in Brazil.
Clinical and laboratory features of cardiac cirrhosis:
(1) severe right-sided heart failure associated with hepatomegaly
(2) ascites with a high protein concentration
(3) elevated serum-to-ascites albumin gradient (see 10.09.04)
The diagnosis requires exclusion of other conditions that can cause cirrhosis.
Congestive hepatic fibrosis is similar but lacks the regenerative nodules in the liver and is clinically silent.
