Description

Travis et al proposed a standard definition of clinical remission for a patient with ulcerative colitis based on clinical symptoms and endoscopy. Induction of a remission is the goal of treatment for a patient with active ulcerative colitis. The authors are from John Radcliffe Hospital at Oxford, England.

Criteria for remission in a patient with ulcerative colitis:

(1) complete cessation of rectal bleeding

(2) complete cessation of urgency

(3) normal stool frequency (absence of any increase)

The clinical impression is best confirmed by complete mucosal healing on endoscopy.
