Description

Thompson and Nunn reported diagnostic criteria for the Pervasive Refusal Syndrome (PRS).


 

Patient selection: pediatric

 

Criteria for the Pervasive Refusal Syndrome:

(1) definite refusal of food, resulting in weight loss

(2) social withdrawal (school refusal, isolation, etc)

(3) partial or complete refusal in >= 2 of 3 domains (see below)

(4) active and angry resistance to encouragement or help

(5) exclusion of an alternative organic diagnosis that can explain the findings better

(6) exclusion of an alternative psychiatric diagnosis that can explain the findings better

 

Domains evaluated for refusal:

(1) mobilization

(2) speech

(3) attention to personal care
