Description

The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, developed criteria for significant mucocutaneous bleeding in a patient with von Willebrand's disease.


 

Criteria for significant mucocutaneous bleeding - one or more of the following:

(1) recurrent nose bleeds requiring medical treatment and/or causing anemia

(2) oral cavity bleeding with one or more of the following:

(2a) lasting for at least one half hour

(2b) restarting over the next 7 days

(2c) requiring medical treatment

(3) skin laceration bleeding with one or more of the following:

(3a) lasting for at least one half hour

(3b) restarting over the next 7 days

(3c) requiring medical treatment

(4) menorrhagia requiring medical attention and/or leading to anemia

(5) prolonged bleeding associated with or following a dental extraction or other oral surgery

(6) spontaneous gastrointestinal hemorrhage unexplained by local cause (ulcer, portal hypertension) requiring medical attention and/or leading to anemia

(7) prolonged bleeding from other skin or mucous membrane surfaces (eye, ear, respiratory tract, genitourinary tract) requiring medical treatment
