Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) can be diagnosed based on clinical, laboratory and radiological features. An ad hoc committee of the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) developed criteria for its diagnosis.
Criteria for the diagnosis of EPS:
(1) intermittent or continuous bowel obstruction, usually involving the ileum
(2) fever with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) or other marker of systemic inflammation
(3) diffuse peritoneal thickening
(4) fibrous tissue encapsulating the bowel with cocooning and calcifications
