Description

Taal et al listed major and minor criteria for the diagnosis of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).


Major criteria:

(1) serum antimitochondrial antibody titer >= 1:20

(2) compatible liver biopsy (duct lesion with a mononuclear infiltration affecting the bile duct epithelium with or without a granulomatous reaction in connection with a bile duct or an atypical proliferation)

 

Minor criteria:

(1) pruritis with need of medications

(2) jaundice with normal clotting factors

(3) serum alkaline phosphatase level >= 2 times the upper limit of normal

(4) serum IgM concentration > 2.8 g/L

(5) abnormal Schirmer test (for tear production, with < 10 mm secretion in 5 minutes)
